A Shocking Blow to Xbox: 80% of Users Chose to Buy the Same Game on PS5

In this generation of consoles, the market verdict is clear: Sony has beaten Microsoft, with PS5 and PS5 Pro sales volumes significantly higher than the combination of Xbox Series X and Series S. This massive difference in installed base generates an inevitable domino effect on multiplatform software sales, highlighting an increasingly deep gap between the two ecosystems.

The Gap in Single Player Games

According to a recent report by Christopher Dring, a respected editor at The Game Business, the discrepancy becomes almost overwhelming when analyzing the commercial performance of exclusively single-player titles. Referring to notable productions such as Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, and 007 First Light, the global data speaks clearly: PlayStation 5 devours between 75% and 80% of the total copies sold on consoles at launch. Xbox Series X|S must settle for the remaining 20-25% (not considering PC and Switch 2 markets).

The Multiplayer Factor and the Case of GTA 6

This huge advantage tends to diminish, although it remains evident, in games focused on the online multiplayer segment. In this scenario, all eyes in the industry are on the phenomenon of GTA 6. In recent hours, rumors and leaks have circulated about a crushing commercial ratio favoring Sony, roughly quantifiable at about 8 copies sold on PS5 for every single copy placed on Xbox. However, Dring's analysis calls for caution: while PlayStation's advantage will be undeniable, the actual gap for the Rockstar Games blockbuster is likely to be less than the most extreme rumors that have leaked online.
