Netflix Changes Account Rules: Every Profile Will Need a Dedicated Email Address to Continue Accessing

Netflix has introduced a permanent change to its access system that alters how user profiles are managed. Starting June 15, 2026, the platform has begun rolling out an update that requires every profile associated with a subscription to be linked to a personal and unique email address, with the only exception being child-specific profiles.

The development emerged when several users started seeing a message prompting them to add an email address to their profile in order to continue using the service. In some cases, those using an additional profile under a family subscription had to create a completely independent login to regain access to the content.

Netflix has confirmed that this change is permanent and that the rollout began on June 15, 2026. During the setup process, users may also be asked to provide their first and last name, although this latter information is not mandatory.

What is Netflix's objective with this move? The goal of the new setting is to assign personal credentials to each user, facilitating processes such as password changes, access from new devices, independent management of profile settings, and potential use of two-factor authentication. Each user will also be able to independently configure preferences such as language, audio, and viewing options.

However, the update has sparked numerous reactions online. Some users find the new procedure less practical, especially in households where multiple people use different profiles on the same television or shared device. Others have expressed concerns regarding the collection of email addresses, arguing that Netflix could use this information for advertising purposes as well.

Indeed, the platform's privacy policy allows for the possibility of sharing email addresses with companies involved in marketing and advertising activities. Several users have also reported starting to receive promotional emails dedicated to Netflix content automatically, even though there is an option to unsubscribe later.
