ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot tested the EuroSuit spacesuit (made by CNES, Decathlon, Spartan Space) aboard the ISS
During the mission of ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, currently aboard the International Space Station, a brief test of the EuroSuit spacesuit was conducted. This model is designed to be a simpler intravehicular spacesuit (IVA) compared to those used for extravehicular activities (EVA) such as Axiom Space's AxEMU. It is a solution comparable to those seen when astronauts are aboard the Crew Dragon capsules (in white and gray) or the orange suits used inside the Orion capsule for the Artemis program.
The EuroSuit spacesuit is a project initiated by CNES, with development starting in December 2023. In addition to the French space agency, other entities such as Spartan Space, MEDES (a French space medicine institute), and the sporting goods company Decathlon have joined the effort. The prototype of the spacesuit arrived aboard the ISS thanks to the SpaceX CRS-34 resupply mission in May, and now Adenot has had the opportunity to test it.
According to reports, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, in addition to collaborating in daily life aboard the ISS, was able to try the EuroSuit spacesuit within the European Columbus laboratory module. The aim was to determine whether the IVA suit could be donned in less than 2 minutes and whether it was comfortable and allowed the astronaut to perform movements.
At the end of the test, Adenot was able to provide feedback to engineers about her user experience. Although not explicitly stated, in addition to the test in mid-June, there may have been another towards the end of May (again involving the same European astronaut), and a third test could occur in the near future.
Further tests are being conducted on Earth, and it appears that Spartan Space has performed buoyancy tests and assessed the ability to move in challenging conditions, as well as a simulation for helicopter or support ship rescue during a potential water landing. The campaign for testing the EuroSuit intravehicular spacesuit is expected to conclude by the end of 2027, after which production of the final models will begin.
