Netflix presents Unhinged, the new interactive horror experience that turns your smartphone into a controller
Netflix is preparing to launch Unhinged, a new interactive experience that combines elements of video games and psychological thrillers. Available from June 30, the project aims to engage players in an intense and suspenseful story, using the smartphone as a fundamental tool for interaction with the game world.
The protagonist of the adventure is Ava, voiced by Zoë Kravitz. The woman finds herself trapped in her own apartment building during the passage of a devastating Category 5 hurricane. Isolated from the outside world, she can only rely on phone contact with her best friend Claire, voiced by Sadie Sink, who lives in the building across the street.
As time passes, the situation becomes increasingly unsettling. The building's staircases are inaccessible, every escape route seems blocked, and some strange events raise suspicions that someone or something is hiding within the building. What initially appears to be a simple emergency caused by bad weather quickly transforms into a mystery-filled and tension-packed tale.
How to play Unhinged: Netflix's new interactive title?
To play, simply start Unhinged from the Netflix Games section and connect your smartphone using a QR code displayed on the screen. The phone becomes a true controller: the movements made by the player are directly mirrored by the protagonist's hands, allowing players to direct the flashlight and observe the surrounding environments.
The audio is also an integral part of the experience. Phone calls and messages are played directly on the player's smartphone, ringing and vibrating as if they are part of the story, while ambient sound effects come from the television.
There are two game modes provided. The Story mode eliminates the possibility of failure and allows players to exclusively focus on the narrative. The Standard mode, on the other hand, introduces challenges based on reaction speed: in critical moments, players must quickly find the required items before time runs out. The voice cast also includes Troy Baker as Ben, the building's caretaker. The development has been entrusted to Night School Studio, known for Oxenfree and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals.
