Formula E Unveils Record-Breaking Season: More Power, More Races, and Sprint Events Coming in 2027
While the current championship is still in full swing, Formula E is eager to showcase what the future holds for the category, having already revealed the new Gen4 single-seater some time ago. It is this new vehicle that is expected to generate renewed interest in the championship, thanks to its power of over 815 HP, incredible acceleration, and excellent top speeds.
It starts with stating that there will be 21 races in 2027, the most ever, and to achieve this, the so-called "double headers"—weekends with two races at the same location—were not enough. There are also important new entries in the list of cities hosting the 100% electric championship.
Examples include the E-Prix of Austin at COTA (Circuit of The Americas), and Zandvoort, where there will be a double event at the Mascot Circuit. London confirms its status as a double-race venue, shifting locations to Brands Hatch, and will no longer be the final stop, which will instead be Tokyo.
However, the tracks hosting a double event will no longer see a repeat of the previous day's race, but fundamentally different contests, with the introduction of the Sprint race concept, which for Formula E is named E-PrixUnleashed. This will not only be a shorter and faster race but also come with different rules. Below are the main differences:
E-PrixUnleashed vs E-Prix
| Feature | E-PrixUnleashed | E-Prix |
|---|---|---|
| Sprint duration | 30 minutes | 45 minutes |
| High downforce aero setup | Yes | No |
| ATTACK MODE duration | 6 minutes | 8 minutes |
| PIT BOOST | None | Mandatory |
To complete the picture of innovations, next season will see the entry of Opel as a manufacturer, joining confirmed names like Jaguar, Nissan, Citroën, Lola Cars, Mahindra, and Porsche.
