Gemini Code Assist and Gemini CLI Say Goodbye: Moving to Antigravity
Google has confirmed the closure of the consumer versions of its AI tools for developers, Gemini Code Assist for GitHub and Gemini CLI. This move is part of a strategic realignment aimed at pushing users towards the new platform Antigravity.
The closure of the consumer versions of Gemini CLI and Code Assist will transition into Antigravity CLI. The deprecation of Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist for GitHub is set for June 18, 2026. As for Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, the complete shutdown, which will render the tool permanently unusable for code review activities, is scheduled for July 17, 2026. It is important to note that these measures will have no impact on the enterprise version of Gemini Code Assist, which will continue to be supported by Google.

Google has also specified that although Antigravity CLI will not have 1:1 feature parity from the outset, it will retain the most critical features such as Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents, and Extensions.
Google's decision to retire tools with such a short lifespan raises some doubts about the long-term strategy of the tech giant regarding AI tools for developers. This is not the first time the company has introduced and then phased out products, sometimes even highly regarded ones, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty among users who invest time in learning and integrating these solutions into their workflows.
However, in this case, the discontinuation is motivated by a consolidation towards a new platform, Antigravity CLI, which promises to be faster and more unified, but will require developers to adapt to a new ecosystem.
Developers, particularly those operating outside large corporations and relying on accessible tools, seek solutions that ensure continuity. The path outlined by Google with this and other discontinuations suggests an approach that is still in the process of settling with regards to integrating Gemini into the coding sector, with necessary compromises that, at least in this case, have disadvantaged the consumer user base in favor of a unified vision with Antigravity.
