Android 17 Debuts on Pixel: Here’s What Changes with the New Major Release
Google has begun the global rollout of stable Android 17 for its range of Pixel smartphones and tablets, starting from the Pixel 6 model to the latest Pixel 10. The release, which has come earlier than the usual autumn timelines in light of Big G's new development schedule, coincides with the June 2026 Feature Drop. The update is approximately 1.5 GB in size and brings a massive package of software optimizations, bug fixes, and new features designed to enhance the daily user experience of the devices.
The most significant visual novelty in the new version of the operating system is the debut of Bubbles, a tool that transforms any application into a floating window on the screen by long-pressing the icon. This system allows managing up to five applications simultaneously without having to leave the active screen. On foldable devices and tablets, handling these elements is facilitated by the presence of the Bubble Bar in the lower right corner of the screen, which allows for quick resizing, moving, or enlarging of windows.

The management of quick toggles in Quick Settings has also changed, where the old Internet panel now gives way to separate controls for Wi-Fi and mobile data, accompanied by an independent slider for Google Assistant volume.
On the security front, Google has implemented strict changes to counter physical device thefts. Within the Find Hub section, the "Mark as Lost" feature is enriched with biometric authentication lock, preventing malicious users from accessing data or disabling tracking even if they have the PIN code. The system also reduces the number of allowed consecutive unlock attempts and lengthens the waiting times between incorrect entries.
Regarding the privacy of personal data, Android 17 introduces a limited contact selector that prevents sharing the entire address book with third-party apps and a one-time geolocation permission system, supported by a persistent visual indicator when the location is detected in the background. Then, there are Screen Reactions, which allow recording a selfie video with the phone screen as the background, and in the coming months, a foldable gaming mode will arrive, allowing one of the two screens available on a foldable to be used as a gamepad.
Alongside Android 17, Google has released the June Feature Drop, which extends the use of tools based on generative artificial intelligence. Within the Gemini application, the Gemini Omni video model for Pro subscribers and the Lyria 3 music generator make their debut. On the hardware front, the Voice Translate feature, capable of translating calls in real-time while recreating the user’s voice tone, debuts on the Tensor G4 chip of Pixel 10a, while Quick Share compatibility with AirDrop expands to Pixel 8a and 9a models.
The Take a Message feature expands to 22 new countries, offering the possibility to record personalized response messages. The changes also affect the Pixel Watch range, which now integrates emergency sharing with selected contacts in the event of detected road accidents, falls, or absence of a heartbeat.
The update brings a wide range of technical fixes aimed at improving energy efficiency and system stability. Among the main interventions are the resolution of memory leak issues that caused interface slowdowns and fixes for anomalies related to slow wireless charging between 75% and 80%. You can force the update by checking for new ones in your device settings, waiting your turn in Google’s customary rollout: it has already arrived on our Pixel 10 Pro XL.
