After RAM. Framework announces SSD price increases: 'previous prices are unsustainable'
It was only a matter of time before SSDs faced the same fate as RAM, and that moment has arrived. The first to announce their price adjustment was Framework Laptop, a company known for its modular and upgradable laptops. According to the company, new supplies are arriving at "substantially higher" costs, a situation that has made price increases for customers inevitable. Framework did not specify the exact amount of the increases, but the prices currently charged for Sandisk SN7100 SSD modules provide a concrete reference: the 500 GB variant is offered at $135, the 1 TB model costs $265, while the 2 TB configuration reaches $505.
The increase in NAND prices has also affected the company's accessory line. Framework has indeed decided to temporarily halt the production of the 250 GB Storage Expansion Card. The company explained that costs have risen to levels that make it unsustainable to create new stocks, especially considering that the final price would be many times higher than the original. Units already available will continue to be sold, but the company is looking for alternative sources for NAND memory procurement.
The situation is different on the system memory front. Prices for DDR5, at least for the moment, seem to have found a phase of stabilization. Framework stated that they have managed to keep their prices unchanged from the previous month. Currently, an 8 GB DDR5-5600 SoDIMM module is sold for $160, two 8 GB modules reach $320, while a single 16 GB module costs $235. The company has also updated the price of the 128 GB version of its Desktop PC, which is now offered at $3,449 without any storage unit included.
The stability observed in the DDR5 segment does not yet allow for speculation about the end of pricing pressures on memories. Framework emphasizes that the absence of further increases is limited to the current month and that several months of a similar trend will be needed before assessing a potential market rebalancing.
