Stranger Than Heaven Revolutionizes Yakuza's Combat System with Stamina and Trigger Controls
The new project from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, titled Stranger Than Heaven, is attracting considerable attention for its radical changes to the typical combat system of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. Presented during a demo at the Summer Game Fest 2026, the game exclusively showcased its gameplay set in three different eras of Japanese history. The experience focused solely on combat, without side activities, putting the player in the shoes of a protagonist armed only with determination and an improvised weapon.
One of the most innovative elements concerns the fighting system, which has been completely rethought compared to previous chapters. The classic "Heat" moves have been removed and replaced by a system based on stamina, which directly impacts the ability to attack, defend, and react.
Combat is now built around the triggers and bumper buttons of the controller, which control different limbs of the character: punches and kicks are executed based on the L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons, allowing players to charge attacks to increase their power. This choice frees up the front buttons, now primarily dedicated to dodging and defense.
Additional Details on the Combat System of Stranger Than Heaven
During hands-on testing, the system displayed both potential and some limitations. In fights against large groups, the automatic target system was sometimes imprecise, making combat control less fluid. However, the design of the animations and the variety of situations, especially in single duels, highlighted a more technical and dynamic approach compared to the past.
Stamina management is central: when an enemy exhausts their energy, they become vulnerable to powerful counterattacks that replace the old special moves of the series. This system encourages a more strategic pace, based on waiting, pressure, and timing.
The demo also included a particularly challenging confrontation against an opponent armed with a sword, characterized by unpredictable attacks and a progressive escalation of difficulty. Its techniques varied depending on remaining health, including quick strikes and difficult-to-avoid grabs, necessitating precise use of dodges. From a narrative standpoint, the game could connect to the origins of the main series' story and the birth of significant criminal organizations, although the developers have not yet confirmed these links. Stranger Than Heaven is set to release on January 15, 2027.
