'I no longer recognize myself in this company': an Android engineer left Google for ethical reasons
René Mayrhofer, a senior engineer involved in the development of Android security, has decided to leave Google after years of work within the company. His departure was motivated by a growing disconnect from the strategic choices of the company, particularly regarding collaborations with the defense sector and the use of artificial intelligence in military contexts.
Mayrhofer joined Google in 2017 and, in addition to his role at the Mountain View group, also engages in academic activities as a university professor in Austria. In a communication sent to colleagues prior to his resignation, the engineer explained that he no longer recognizes himself in the direction the company has taken, asserting that some values once presented as fundamental have been progressively sidelined.
Among the issues highlighted are the collaborations with U.S. government entities related to defense and the increasing involvement of Google in the development of artificial intelligence technologies intended for military applications. According to Mayrhofer, such initiatives are incompatible with his personal beliefs, which he openly defines as pacifist.
The now former Android engineer criticized many business decisions made by Google. The ex-employee also criticized other company decisions, including those related to environmental goals. In his analysis, the growing energy demands of modern artificial intelligence systems would have contributed to distancing the company from some previously stated commitments regarding sustainability.
Google had built part of its public image around the famous motto "Don't be evil," which over the years has become one of the distinctive elements of the corporate culture. However, according to Mayrhofer, the current organization is profoundly different from the one that convinced him to accept the position almost a decade ago.
The engineer also argues that decisions regarding sensitive agreements and collaborations are now approved with limited involvement from internal staff. While recognizing the presence of many highly skilled professionals within the company, he believes that their ability to influence strategic choices has diminished over time. Among his concerns is also the potential use of some artificial intelligence technologies in large-scale surveillance systems. All of this has led to his departure.
