'Artificial General Engineer': Jeff Bezos' AI Worth $41 Billion Aims to Assist Engineers

Jeff Bezos has decided to bet on a new chapter of artificial intelligence. The founder of Amazon has indeed outlined in more detail the vision of Prometheus, a startup focused on developing AI tools aimed at engineering and the design of physical products.

The company, which has emerged publicly in recent months, recently completed a significant funding round of $12 billion, bringing its total valuation to $41 billion. Bezos serves as co-CEO alongside Vik Bajaj, one of the founders of Verily, the healthcare research group born within Alphabet.

According to the New York Times, Prometheus' stated goal is particularly ambitious: to create an "artificial general engineer", an AI-based platform capable of supporting advanced engineering activities and contributing to the design of complex products.

According to Bezos, the technology under development will not be limited to automating specific tasks but will provide tools capable of assisting engineers during various design phases. The focus is particularly on sectors that require high technical skills and a significant amount of simulations and design verifications.

The applications identified by Prometheus pertain to fields such as robotics, drug development, and advanced manufacturing. In all these contexts, artificial intelligence could accelerate the design of new products and reduce the time required to reach testing and production phases.

Currently, the company has about 150 employees, a number that highlights a relatively small structure compared to the achieved valuation. However, the substantial funding obtained confirms investors' confidence in a technology aimed at extending the use of AI beyond traditional chatbots and content generation tools.

Bezos also cited Blue Origin as a concrete example of companies that could benefit from these solutions. Companies engaged in developing sophisticated devices, including rocket engines and systems with high engineering complexity, could use Prometheus' tools to improve and speed up the design processes.

With a valuation already exceeding $40 billion and a vision that looks towards integrating artificial intelligence into the most advanced industrial processes, Prometheus is now preparing for the technological development phase that will transform the idea of the artificial engineer into a tangible platform.
