NVIDIA Kept This Hidden for Years: A Rare Prototype of RTX 2080 Ti Super Emerges Online

In the video card market, engineering prototypes represent a valuable testimony to the strategies of manufacturers, often changed mid-course, even just before commercial launch. Recently, on online marketplaces eBay and Facebook Marketplace, a rare functioning sample of a GPU that was never officially distributed has emerged: the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Super.

The Turing generation (RTX 2000) was the first to welcome a refresh called "Super," which materialized in the market with improved variants of the RTX 2060, 2070, and 2080 models. Although there were rumors at the time about a subsequent release of a revision of the RTX 2080 Ti, that card was never dethroned from its top position in the consumer segment. NVIDIA, however, had considered it quite seriously.

The prototype in question features a technical configuration that sits halfway between the RTX 2080 Ti and the Titan RTX—non-gaming solution. From the perspective of the graphics chip, the sample integrates the full version of the TU102, with as many as 4,608 active shaders (or CUDA cores). For comparison, the RTX 2080 Ti stopped at 4,352 CUDA cores, leaving the 4,608 cores an exclusive prerogative of the Titan RTX.

The similarities with the Titan continue in the memory and data bus department. The prototype adopts a 384-bit bus combined with 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, values that exceed the 352 bit and 11 GB of the RTX 2080 Ti. The Titan RTX offered a similar 384-bit bus interface but was paired with a whopping 24 GB of memory.

The RTX 2080 Ti Super stands out for a glossy front panel and an all-black backplate, with the silkscreen "RTX 2080 Super," likely a way to keep the project "secret." From a software perspective, the card is not recognized by the standard official drivers distributed by NVIDIA. To enable the proper functioning and initialization of the component, the current owner had to manually modify the INF files of the NVIDIA driver package, forcing the recognition of the specific hardware ID of the unit.

In reality, this is not the first absolute sighting of new Turing variants with 12 GB of memory; in the past, prototypes equipped with GTX branding rather than RTX had already surfaced, demonstrating how NVIDIA's internal validation phase explored multiple iterations before arriving at the definitive lineup based on the three Super models we all know.

Why was this RTX 2080 Ti Super shelved? It's hard to say for sure, but probably for various reasons, from the performance leap that may not have been entirely convincing to final performance being excessively close to the much more expensive Titan RTX.
