More Smartphones, Less Fiki Fiki: Young People's Habits Changed After 2007

Two recent academic studies have associated the global spread of smartphones with a widespread decline in fertility rates, pinpointing the launch of the iPhone in 2007 as the turning point of an unprecedented demographic trend.

The analyses highlight how digital mediation has redefined the daily lives of the younger population, drastically reducing physical socialization moments and the frequency of sexual relationships. Data shows that the introduction of mobile technology played a crucial role in determining the drop in births, surpassing the impact of economic factors or access to contraception.

The first research, titled "The Collapse of Teen Fertility in the Digital Era," led by two professors from the University of Cincinnati, emphasized that the fertility rate among adolescents has globally collapsed since 2007. Academics explain that pervasive connectivity has altered the very structure of relationships among peers. As most interactions shifted to devices, the time spent physically together has decreased sharply. This dynamic has reduced unstructured spontaneous contacts, contexts in which historically, most unintended teenage pregnancies occurred. Researchers examined records from several countries, including the United States, England, and Wales, to rule out the possibility that the phenomenon was linked to local welfare reforms.

Two New Studies Highlight a Correlation Between Smartphones and Declining Fertility

The second research, titled "Is the iPhone Birth Control? Causal Evidence from AT&T's 2007-2011 Carrier Monopoly" and published by the National Bureau of Economic Researchers, focused on the U.S. context, where the overall birth rate has dropped by 22% since 2007. Experts exploited the temporary exclusive agreement between Apple and mobile provider AT&T to isolate the actual impact of the device. From June 2007 to February 2011, the iPhone was only usable on AT&T's network. By comparing the expansion of AT&T's broadband coverage with that of competitors Verizon and Sprint, who showed null effects in control tests, scholars isolated a direct correlation.

Statistical calculations indicate that access to mobile technology caused a decrease in births ranging from 4.5% to 8.0% among those aged 15 to 19, and from 3.2% to 6.6% among those aged 20 to 24. The effect was less pronounced but still statistically significant in older cohorts. According to the paper, the gradual expansion of the smartphone market explains a share between 33% and 52% of the overall decline in the fertility rate recorded among women aged 15 to 44.

National surveys on time use and private behaviors confirm that mobile technology has reduced direct physical contacts, alongside an increase in online pornography consumption and a contraction in sexual activity. This scenario compels analysts to assess the long-term side effects of the digitalization of society. Studies reveal that the transformation of communication habits has also changed indicators of psychological well-being, highlighting a rise in youth suicides during the same timeframe.

The authors of the research now intend to extend their measurements to Asian and European markets to verify whether the statistical models developed in the United States find exact correspondence in social contexts characterized by historically lower birth rates, such as those in Japan and Italy. The complete data from the National Bureau of Economic Researchers' study have been distributed to members of the scientific community and will be officially presented during upcoming academic conferences dedicated to global demographic dynamics.
