Is Pokémon Go Used to Train Military Drones? What Emerged from Niantic's Data

Niantic Spatial has licensed data derived from about 30 billion environmental scans, collected over years of activity from Pokémon Go players, for the training of visual navigation algorithms now possibly aimed at military drones and war robotics.
The partnership, signed on December 16, 2025, with the U.S. defense contractor Vantor (previously known as Maxar Intelligence), aims to integrate a ground-based camera localization system with Vantor's aerial navigation software Raptor. This synergy will allow unmanned aircraft and field assets to operate in high-density environments, where GPS signals are constantly obscured or altered by countermeasures and jammers.
For years, gamers have recorded short 360-degree videos of the so-called Pokéstop in exchange for digital rewards, accepting terms of service that granted Niantic a transferable license over the images. These data have powered a Visual Positioning System (VPS) capable of determining the exact position of a camera by cross-referencing visual landmarks with a pre-existing 3D map. Niantic Spatial's CTO, Brian McClendon, confirmed the effectiveness of this approach for active robotics in areas where GPS usually fails and satellite connectivity is absent, much like in war zones.
The Historical Link with Intelligence and the User Consent Knot

Niantic was indeed born as an evolution of Keyhole, a geographic data company that, in 2003, received funding from In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital arm, to support U.S. troops during operations in Iraq.
Later acquired by Google and then spun off, the gaming division was sold in May 2025 to Savvy Games Group, an entity controlled by the Saudi Arabian sovereign fund, for 3.5 billion dollars, while the mapping technology platform remained independent under the Niantic Spatial brand.
When questioned about the overlap between commercial databases and military applications, Vantor stated that it would not use current video game data but refused to confirm whether the AI model integrated into its systems had previously been trained with those specific metrics. Niantic Spatial admitted to using the scans for developing a preliminary version of its navigation ecosystem.
Experts in technology ethics from Delft University, cited by the source, highlighted the technical impossibility of tracking or purging the original data once it has been assimilated by predictive models, raising issues related to user informed consent, as users ceded images of their everyday life for gaming purposes without anticipating potential use in weaponization programs.
