Instagram Expands Control Over Algorithm by Introducing 'Your Algorithm' Feature to Main Feed
Instagram has announced a significant update that extends the 'Your Algorithm' feature to the main feed of the app, thereby enhancing the personalization options for users.
This new feature allows users to more directly indicate which content they wish to see and which they prefer to avoid, based on their activities within the platform. The system initially proposes a list of topics automatically generated by the algorithm, built on the user's interactions in the app. From there, every change made by the user helps recalibrate the parameters that regulate the displayed content, making the feed potentially more aligned with individual preferences.
The 'Your Algorithm' feature was first introduced in a testing phase on Reels in October 2025 and was subsequently extended to the Explore section in April the following year. With this new step, Instagram now allows a further level of direct intervention in the main feed, which is the central space of the user experience.
The Evolution of Instagram
According to the platform, this is a significant evolution that responds to the growing demand for greater user control over the proposed content. The update also represents an important communicative element, as it addresses criticisms related to the feeling that algorithms completely dictate the user experience.
At the same time, this choice fits into a broader context of transformation of social networks towards systems increasingly based on automatic recommendations. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, noted that the evolution towards artificial intelligence has reduced users' ability to directly influence their experience, weakening the traditional role of connections and personal choices.
Mosseri explained that in the past, simply following other profiles was an effective tool for defining what was seen in the feed, while today, recommendation systems have made this mechanism less critical. According to his analysis, this change contributes to a perception where experience seems to be imposed rather than actively constructed.
Looking to the future, Instagram envisions even more advanced systems based on artificial intelligence, capable of offering increasingly personalized and dynamic experiences.
