Historic Personnel Cuts at Microsoft: Operation XBOX Reset Begins
Microsoft has Launched Major Layoff Preparations in the XBOX Division
Microsoft has initiated preparations for a major wave of layoffs within the XBOX division. The maneuver will become operational next month, right after the end of the fiscal year scheduled for June 30.
CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty have broken the silence by sending an internal note to employees, formalizing the start of a radical restructuring named "XBOX Reset" that will unfold over the next 100 days. Bloomberg has confirmed that personnel cuts are expected, specifying that the operation will also heavily impact budgets allocated for marketing and other critical business areas, although management has declined to issue official statements to the press.
Industry rumors, also circulated through the Giant Bomb podcast, have quantified the maneuver to involve approximately 1,000 jobs at risk, suggesting the potential closure of some development studios or significant changes to internal production lines. Management has justified the impending drastic shift through evidence of unsustainable financial data. Excluding the contribution from Activision Blizzard King, Microsoft has invested over $20 billion in the last 5 years across content, platform development, and hardware subsidies.
The Collapse of Hardware Costs and the New Helix Model
During the same timeframe, annual revenues have contracted by nearly half a billion dollars. The current fiscal year is projected to close with an estimated margin of accountability around 3%, a significant decline compared to the previous year that reflects a situation of deep structural suffering caused by inconsistent strategy and brand dilution.
The challenges within the gaming division have extended to long-term technological projections. Sharma and Booty have acknowledged a severe crisis in hardware component supply. Internal estimates for the Christmas period of 2027 have outlined a critical scenario, with costs for individual items projected to exceed more than five times the prices paid just two years prior, a trajectory mirroring that recorded in the memory market. The current infrastructure platform is deemed inadequate to face future challenges, forcing executives to rethink the entire tech stack.
Management has confirmed its intention to remain committed to the Helix project, but has formally opened up to the necessity of new business models and external collaborations for device production. XBOX strategy head Matthew Ball has suggested the introduction of consoles designed with different logics than in the past. This opening paves the way for OEM PC manufacturers to create XBOX devices based on new AMD chips.
The revival plans include a deep reconstruction of the ecosystem to try to compete in the hardware, PC, mobile, and streaming sectors, potentially resorting to new mergers and acquisitions if necessary. Sharma's management has already mandated drastic choices regarding the software portfolio, enforcing total console exclusivity for prominent productions such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, in an attempt to secure the ecosystem before the restructuring enters its most painful phase.
