FASTCloud Open Source: a Sovereign Cloud for Italy from Fastweb + Vodafone

A new cloud infrastructure based on open source software, localized in Italy and fully compliant with the principles of the European Cloud and AI Development Act. This is what Fastweb + Vodafone promises with FASTCloud Open Source, which utilizes OpenStack and aims to create a sovereign cloud infrastructure for businesses and the Public Administration in Italy.

Fastweb + Vodafone Launches FASTCloud Open Source

The topic of open source is increasingly dominating public debate, similar to that of renewable energy sources: both, in fact, guarantee a higher level of sovereignty compared to traditional alternatives, as they are controlled locally and do not give rise to dependency on third parties. Just look, for a concrete example of what kind of effect this dependency can have, at what happened to small clouds swept away by Broadcom and the change in its partner program.

And this was the idea behind FASTCloud Open Source: Fastweb + Vodafone saw in open source the opportunity to achieve greater autonomy and therefore designed the new infrastructure internally to utilize open and standardized technologies, "more flexible, modular and independent from individual technologies and platforms" as reported in the statement released by the company, following the guidelines of the National Cybersecurity Agency. Fastweb + Vodafone emphasizes how "the solution ensures full autonomy from the constraints of roadmaps and licensing models of individual vendors, offering private companies and Public Administrations increased control over data, workloads, and configurations that remain within proprietary Data Centers located in Italy."

FASTCloud Open Source will enable not only access to infrastructure for traditional applications but also for artificial intelligence processing. "With this evolution, Fastweb + Vodafone strengthens its positioning as a reference cloud provider, capable of offering a portfolio of secure, diversified, and sovereign proprietary solutions. FASTCloud Open Source already meets the goals set by the Commission with the new regulatory proposal: physical infrastructure in Italy, open and auditable technologies, independence from individual suppliers, full portability of workloads," stated Augusto Di Genova, Chief B2B Officer of Fastweb + Vodafone.
