The United Kingdom Will Ask Google and Apple to Block Nude Images on Minors' Smartphones

Google, Apple and other tech companies should block access to nude images on smartphones and other tech devices for those under 18 years old. This request comes from the Government of the United Kingdom, ready to initiate legislative action, with a bill proposal, to compel companies to implement such a system.

An Obligation for Manufacturers?

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, emphasized: "This is not an impossible challenge. These are some of the most innovative companies in the world and I believe they can solve it." Companies that do not comply with the future regulations could face fines and, in the most severe cases, criminal liability for non-compliance.

The goal is to integrate new functionalities in devices, including through software updates for devices already on the market, in order to prevent minors under 18 from taking, sending, or viewing sexually explicit images on their phones and other devices.

The United Kingdom has already adopted the Online Safety Act but now aims to raise the level of protection, moving towards legally implementing a system capable of preventing the viewing of nude images. The issue is particularly relevant since 91% of reports of online sexual abuse against minors recorded in 2024 were related to content self-produced by the minors themselves. Meanwhile, there is also a plan in the UK to block access to social media for minors.

The BBC was able to gather a statement from Google, which emphasized: "We are working constructively with UK partners to find effective and privacy-respecting solutions that discourage the spread of harmful content while ensuring a safe digital environment for young people." For now, however, Apple has not commented in any way.
