The Apocalyptic Side of the War in Ukraine: Bird Nests Made from Drone Fiber Optics

In the Donbas, an area of Eastern Ukraine that has been affected by conflict with Russia for years, an incident has been documented that unusually highlights the overlap between armed conflict and natural ecosystems. A bird nest was found made from fiber optic wires traceable to cables used by FPV drones deployed on the front lines.

The episode was shared through a photograph posted on the platform X by Olena Tregub, co-founder of the Independent Defense Anti-Corruption Commission, who attributed the shot to researcher Oleh Malchenko. According to the account, a glide bomb knocked down a tree in the Donbas area, revealing the nest among the broken branches.

The observed structure appears to be composed of natural elements, such as dry grass, intertwined with thin plastic filaments related to optical fiber cables. This material is increasingly common in modern combat scenarios, particularly in FPV systems (First Person View) that use a physical connection between drone and operator.

Unlike radio-controlled drones, wired FPV platforms use fiber optics to avoid interference and electronic countermeasures. However, this technical choice results in the dispersal of long cables in the environment, especially in high-usage scenarios like the Ukrainian conflict, where such systems are deployed on a large scale.

The coils used can reach lengths of dozens of kilometers, with some cases measuring up to about 65 km, generating a network of non-biodegradable plastic residues that accumulate in fields, forests, and trenches.

From a biological perspective, the material presents characteristics that may make it attractive to certain species: it is lightweight, flexible, and durable, and can provide a certain degree of thermal insulation when woven with plant elements. This explains its possible integration into nests along with natural materials.

However, the widespread presence of synthetic fibers in natural contexts raises environmental concerns. Studies and on-field observations have already highlighted the risk of entanglement for birds and small mammals, as well as the progressive fragmentation of the material into microplastics, with potential long-term impacts on local ecosystems.

Researchers and observers of the conflict have also reported that wildlife in areas near the front line is exposed to additional stress factors, including explosions, constant noise, debris, and disorientation.

Therefore, the case of the nest in the Donbas represents an extreme example of nature's adaptation to a heavily altered environment due to warfare, and at the same time highlights the indirect consequences of the proliferation of low-cost, high-use military technologies.
