AMD Bets £2 Billion on the UK: AI Research and Innovation at the Core of Investment

During London Tech Week, AMD announced a series of initiatives aimed at the British market, highlighted by a financial commitment that could reach up to £2 billion over the next five years. The stated goal is to accelerate the development of AI infrastructure in the country, expand access to advanced computing resources, and support the training of new technical skills.

The announcement is part of the AI Opportunities Action Plan and the AI Hardware Strategy of the UK government, with which AMD intends to align its strategies. CEO Lisa Su emphasized that the UK possesses the human and institutional resources to establish itself as a global leader in the next phase of artificial intelligence development.

Among the announced partnerships, one stands out with Imperial College London, aimed at advancing computational research in areas ranging from climate modeling to genomics, neuroimaging to multiphysics simulation. The agreement also includes joint activities on training, personnel development, and access to computing resources for students, researchers, and startups, through the WestTech London ecosystem, which encompasses the campuses of South Kensington, Paddington Life Sciences, White City Innovation District, and Old Oak Innovation Cluster.

AMD has also initiated a collaboration with Oriole Networks as part of the Scaling Inference Lab promoted by the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA). The project integrates Oriole's PRISM photonic network architecture with AMD Instinct GPUs and AMD EPYC processors, aiming to address bottlenecks in AI inference through approaches that enhance energy efficiency and latency. The initiative aims to create what could be the first large-scale AI system based on an entirely photonic network.

AMD and Dell Technologies are involved in the development of two supercomputing systems at the University of Cambridge. The first is Zenith, an AI platform dedicated to scientific research funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The second is Sunrise, developed in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and specifically oriented toward nuclear fusion research, funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

Both systems employ AMD Instinct GPUs, AMD EPYC CPUs, and the open-source AMD ROCm software, and are designed to support applications including climate modeling, materials science, engineering simulation, and the development of scientific AI models.
