At the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, Metro 2039 Reveals Its First Real Gameplay

Metro 2039 was showcased again during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 with what represents the first true taste of gameplay from the new chapter developed by 4A Games. Following the cinematic presentation last April, the team released a lengthy trailer of nearly three minutes made entirely with the game engine, offering a more detailed overview of the real experience that awaits players.
The sequences show a mix of spectacular post-apocalyptic landscapes and particularly intense combat moments. The footage uses a mix of first-person perspective and custom shots that focus both on the firefights and the narrative elements that will characterize the adventure.
From a story perspective, Metro 2039 introduces Stranger, a fully voiced protagonist, a first for the series. The character is tormented by disturbing visions and decides to return to the underground system of the Moscow metro, where survivors of the nuclear disaster continue to seek a difficult survival beneath the radioactive surface of the city.
The new political scenario appears deeply changed from the events described in Metro Exodus. The various factions of the metro are now united under the control of the Novoreich, a totalitarian regime led by a new Führer known as Hunter. The trailer gives the first glimpse of the character, described as the man who gained power through propaganda and disinformation.
Regarding gameplay, the footage confirms the return of the most appreciated features of the series, with a combination of stealth, exploration, and first-person combat. The action unfolds both in the underground environments and in the war-devastated outer areas.
New elements include the new weapon Shatun, shown for the first time during a combat encounter, as well as a brand new explosive device for opening pathways. The trailer also hints at new usable items, brand new mutant variants, and additional interaction possibilities with the environment, elements that should expand the options available to players during exploration.
4A Games has also confirmed that the project will have a darker narrative setting compared to previous chapters. The studio, which continues development in Ukraine during the ongoing conflict with Russia, explained that the game's message will focus on the consequences of war, the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom.
Alongside the trailer release, the team has narrowed the previously indicated launch window for winter. Metro 2039 will debut in February 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with digital distribution planned through Steam and Epic Games Store.
