The Return of Fumito Ueda, Creator of Shadow of the Colossus: Gen Atlas Unveiled in a Trailer

During the Summer Game Fest event, Fumito Ueda officially unveiled Gen Atlas, his new video game project, accompanied by a first trailer that significantly expands on the information that emerged during The Game Awards 2024, where the title was first announced under the provisional name "Project: Robot."

The game is developed by genDESIGN, the studio founded by Ueda himself after his departure from Sony Japan Studio, which includes numerous developers who had previously collaborated with him during the production of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.

From a publishing perspective, Gen Atlas will be published by Epic Games, which explains its availability on the Epic Games Store as an exclusive PC channel. The title will also be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No release window has been communicated.

The official statement published by genDESIGN presents a deliberately enigmatic narrative premise: the protagonist awakens with no explanation on an abandoned planet, in the presence of colossal structures that extend over vast plains, deserted facilities, and a constantly changing sea. The remnants of a grand project scattered across the planet's surface serve as the starting point for an exploration that seems to be one of the cornerstone elements of the entire experience.

Central to the gameplay progression is the presence of a colossal robot, described as an entity that opens pathways to otherwise inaccessible areas, altering the player's perception of space and the world. The trailer clearly shows that the forgotten constructions on the planet progressively begin to move, representing a threat with which the protagonist will have to confront both in first person and, presumably, aboard the robot itself.

Gen Atlas is classified as a single-player open-world action-adventure, a definition that aligns with the narrative and structural approach already recognizable in Ueda's previous works, while introducing more explicit combat elements compared to past titles. The trailer highlights a visual aesthetic consistent with the studio's recognizable style: silent environments, monumental architectures, and a melancholic atmosphere that Ueda has made a distinctive element of his production over the years.

Gen Atlas comes ten years after The Last Guardian, released in 2016 on PlayStation 4 after a long and troubled development. Since then, Ueda has not released any other titles. With the founding of genDESIGN in 2024, the Japanese designer formalized his independence from Sony, bringing with him part of the historic staff with whom he had worked in previous decades.

"The team and I are grateful to all the fans who were eager to learn more about our game," Ueda stated, CEO and Creative Director of genDESIGN. "Their passion and enthusiasm have always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of silent wonder and discovery."
