Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, confirmed use of generative AI: Crystal Dynamics comes forward

The use of generative artificial intelligence in video game development continues to spark discussions in the industry, and the latest case concerns Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. After the recent presentation during the State of Play dedicated to upcoming PlayStation titles, the developers confirmed that the project has made use of AI-based tools, adding that the final product will be completely refined and crafted by human professionals.

During the event, Sony showcased a new trailer for the game, a remake that will bring the classic iconic look of Lara Croft to modern systems, alongside revisited puzzles and graphics-updated settings. Following the official presentation, the game's Steam page was updated with new information regarding the use of artificial intelligence.

According to reports, the development of Legacy of Atlantis has been supported by AI tools used to generate temporary assets and facilitate the early phases of exploration and prototyping of the project. The assets created via AI would later be replaced or refined by human artists to align with the game's creative vision.

What impact has the use of AI had for Crystal Dynamics on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis? Crystal Dynamics has officially confirmed the use of generative artificial intelligence tools. The studio stated that its goal is to provide developers with greater creativity and flexibility, in order to create high-quality experiences for players.

However, the adoption of generative AI in video games remains a controversial topic. Some industry professionals, like Tim Sweeney, believe that this technology will be part of all future productions and that its use does not need to be highlighted. Others, like Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, argue that generative AI risks producing games lacking in personality and artistic identity.

The ability of developers to completely eliminate artificially generated assets is also a subject of discussion. A few months ago, Pearl Abyss was compelled to apologize to players after some AI-generated assets, initially considered temporary, remained in the final version of Crimson Desert. A similar situation could generate criticisms for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.
