Chinese Car Designers Critique Ferrari Luce: "Here’s Where They Went Wrong"

Discussions around Ferrari Luce continue unabated, and many industry insiders have wanted to share their impressions. On multiple occasions, Maranello's new electric car has been compared to modern Chinese cars. Thus, a specialized portal for these vehicles, CarNewsChina, decided to seek the opinion of a designer who has worked closely with Chinese companies, although he is not of Asian descent.

This designer is Alexey Semenov, who has worked with NIO on the ES6 and also with GWM (formerly Great Wall). He has also participated in interesting electric car projects, such as the Fiat 500 Electric and Fisker models. He now runs his design studio based in Munich and continues to be involved with cars.

The Chinese portal asked him to provide a professional opinion on Ferrari Luce, and Semenov analyzed several points. Starting with the overall style, which appears short, narrow, and tall—a starting point that is difficult to rectify with other tweaks.

As a wheel expert, he focused on the choice of the two-tone wheel, which is too solid and does not convey the substantial size of the wheel itself, causing a disproportionate imbalance: according to the designer, this is a missed opportunity to highlight wheels that are actually 23" and 24", which instead appear much smaller.

He praised the front end but dismissed the rear end, describing it as somewhat clumsy, poorly integrated with the roofline, and featuring round headlights—a nod to Ferrari's tradition—that remain somewhat out of place.

In contrast, the interiors were well received, where the attention to mechanical and tactile detail is notable according to Semenov, even though they could be associated with any emerging brand, leaving some questions unanswered. CarNewsChina has published Alexey Semenov's full opinion, which you can find here.
