Sony Announces God of War: Laufey, a New Chapter Featuring Kratos' Deceased Wife
PlayStation Studios has officially announced God of War: Laufey, a new chapter in the renowned saga that will feature Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. After narrating Kratos and his son's adventures in the Norse cycle of the series, the developers have decided to explore a new perspective, bringing one of the most important but least developed characters in the God of War narrative universe to the forefront.
The game presentation was accompanied by about twenty minutes of gameplay that appear to belong to the early stages of the adventure. The introductory sequences directly recall the beginning of God of War from 2018: Kratos lays Faye's body on a funeral pyre and pays tribute to her along with Atreus. However, the story quickly takes an unexpected turn.
Faye awakens in a completely different place and seems to be aware of the events that just took place. The protagonist claims to have seen her own funeral pyre and knows that Kratos and Atreus have begun their journey. From that moment, she embarks on a new adventure within a realm never before shown in the series.
God of War: Laufey, Further Details on the New Game Announced at the State of Play
Throughout the gameplay, various fights are shown that retain the typical imprint of the saga, while offering a completely different style compared to Kratos and Atreus. Subsequently, a lengthy narrative sequence shows Faye captured by a new faction of enemies that bear no resemblance to any of the creatures encountered in the Norse saga.
Also introduced is Phranque, described as a "cosmic cube". According to the PlayStation Blog, the setting of the adventure is called Everywhen, a dimension that serves as the afterlife of the gods, where deities from different mythologies compete for power.
During her escape from captivity, Faye uses her magic and obtains a new weapon. It is a blade that can be thrown and recalled, offering numerous tactical possibilities during battles. Accompanying her are also Rue, sentient ribbons connected to the weapon tasked with preventing its loss. The demonstration concludes with an intense one-on-one confrontation showcasing the protagonist's abilities and the brutality of the world she has become trapped in. According to available information, the debut could occur no earlier than 2027.
