Dreame A3 AWD Pro Tested: An Exceptional Robotic Mower
When it comes to robotic mowers designed for challenging lawns, the Dreame A3 AWD Pro 3500 stands out as one of the most complete and ambitious machines we've had the opportunity to test. No perimeter wire, no external antenna, all-wheel drive, and a 3D sensory system that competes with the best products in the premium segment. All of this in a robot designed for areas up to 3,500 square meters.
In this article, we analyze the highlights in favor of this robot, but as always, you can find everything summarized and explained live in our video:
Build Quality: A Tank with Automotive Style
The first impression upon unboxing the Dreame A3 AWD Pro is that you're dealing with something definitely larger than typical "standard" robotic mowers. The dimensions are generous, and its weight requires two hands to lift, while the wheels—especially the rear ones with dense treading and high-grip rubber material—immediately communicate the product's purpose: difficult terrains, significant slopes, and large spaces.
The front wheels are multidirectional: they behave like standard wheels in the driving direction but also allow for side slipping, enabling quick and precise turns thanks to the push from the rear wheels. Under the front cover, there's a suspension system that absorbs ground irregularities, ensuring stability even on surfaces that are far from flat. The 4WD hub motors integrated directly into the wheels allow for handling slopes of up to 80% (38.7°) and obstacles as high as 5.5 cm.
At the front, a bumper with a carbon-fiber-like texture—inspired by Formula 1 according to Dreame—dominates, equipped with a slight excursion to detect impacts, accompanied by a large front LED headlight that will play a fundamental role. On the top, you'll find the LiDAR sensor with a protective rubber dome to be removed before use, a reassuring stop button, and an LCD display with a control wheel to manage settings directly on the robot.
OmniSense 3.0 Technology: The Robot's Eyes
The intelligent heart of the Dreame A3 AWD Pro is the OmniSense™ 3.0 platform, a 3D sensory system representing one of the most evolved proposals in the current landscape of wireless perimeter-less robotic mowers.
OmniSense 3.0 combines two distinct and complementary technologies: 360° 3D LiDAR and AI binocular vision powered by a dual front stereoscopic camera. The LiDAR continuously rotates to create a point cloud that provides centimeter-precise mapping of any environment, functioning perfectly even in the dark. The dual stereoscopic camera processes three-dimensional images of the surroundings through artificial intelligence algorithms, allowing the robot to recognize and classify over 300 types of obstacles—from garden chairs to tools, pets to people—reliably avoiding them. The combination of these two systems enables the automatic creation of a complete 3D map of the garden, without the need for GPS, external antennas, or any type of perimeter wire.
The powerful front LED headlight, stronger than is typically seen in this category of products, is essential for the proper functioning of the cameras: during nighttime, when the LiDAR operates autonomously, the cameras require good lighting to ensure recognition accuracy. The result is a robot that can work 24/7 without losing an ounce of efficiency, even during nighttime sessions.
Mapping: Automatic or Manual, the Choice is Yours
Once Bluetooth pairing is complete with the Dreame Home app—an operation that takes just a few seconds—the robot is ready to create the garden map. The automatic mapping process involves an initial calibration of about a minute, after which the robot independently scans the area, constructing the lawn layout. In a test area of about 160 square meters, the automatic mapping was completed in 3-4 minutes with satisfying results: precise along the regular edges and near hedges, with some room for improvement in more complex areas, such as those with pots, flower beds, or manholes.
For those who prefer maximum control, manual mapping via a virtual joystick in the app is still available and is advisable for small and simply shaped lawns. For larger areas—which is precisely what the Dreame A3 AWD Pro is designed for—automatic mapping represents a significant time saver, with precise results estimated around 90% and corrections easily made later via the "edit map" function.
Cutting: Speed and Precision with Dual Discs
The cutting system is one of the most evident strengths: the dual-disc cutting deck guarantees a cutting width of 40 cm, significantly reducing the number of passes required compared to single-blade models. The cutting height is electronically adjustable via the app from 3 to 10 cm, with all intermediate values. The blades come factory-installed.
In our test on a lawn of about 160 square meters, we set the height to 6 cm and the standard speed, and the robot completed most of the work in just 10 minutes, compared to the over half-hour usually required by a more traditional model. On a lawn of 3,500 square meters, this efficiency gap translates into hours saved. The cutting direction is fully customizable: parallel lines with any angle, checkerboard patterns, or alternating cross cuts between sessions.
Operational efficiency varies based on the chosen mode: in Standard mode, the robot covers up to 2,500 m²/24 hours, in Efficiency mode up to 3,500 m²/24 hours, and in Turbo mode up to 5,000 m²/24 hours. The 36V battery—a higher voltage than many competitors, for which a slightly larger power supply is provided—ensures prolonged sessions and automatic return to base for recharging, with cutting resuming from the interruption point.
EdgeMaster 2.0: Edges Almost Without Finishing Touches
The EdgeMaster™ 2.0 technology allows the cutting deck to shift laterally via a metal piston, bringing the blades within centimeters of the lawn's edge. With this function active, the remaining margin to be finished by hand is reduced to less than 3 cm. An important detail: when EdgeMaster is enabled, the cutting height on the edges is fixed at 3 cm, regardless of the overall setting.
During the test without EdgeMaster activated, the robot still managed to cut up to the last centimeter of grass in areas where the lawn is level with the surrounding pavement, utilizing the wheel traction that overcomes the edge. Around isolated obstacles—trees, stakes, manholes—there are always a few centimeters left uncut, especially near corners, but this is physiological behavior for a robot of this size, designed for open spaces.
App and Advanced Features
The Dreame Home app offers a complete and well-organized control panel. Among the main functionalities are: three mowing speeds, detailed scheduling day by day and hour by hour, management of two distinct maps dividable into zones, restricted areas, custom paths, and even decorative drawings on the grass (hearts, triangles, circles) executed by cutting at two different heights.
The Garden Guardian system integrates advanced safety features: live video streaming from onboard cameras, scheduled patrols, lift alerts, geofencing notifications, protected zones for pets, and anti-theft protection with support for Apple AirTag (dedicated compartment already integrated into the robot). The manual mode with a virtual joystick allows for directing the robot directly in areas where the mapping has been less precise, with the cutting discs active: an elegant solution to eliminate the few remaining finishes without resorting to other tools.
