OneDrive, farewell to incomprehensible file names: the service will use AI to fix them

Microsoft is developing a new feature based on artificial intelligence for its OneDrive platform, called Suggested Rename. This new feature, officially identified within the Microsoft 365 roadmap under entry number 564909, will utilize the Copilot algorithm to examine the internal structure of documents and suggest clearer, more logical, and descriptive naming options compared to the original ones.

The integration addresses the need to simplify the cataloging and subsequent search operations for materials, automating a step that users often overlook or perform inadequately. The official release of the feature is planned for June 2026 and will specifically apply to the web version of OneDrive.

How Suggested Rename Works and Compatible Formats

The operational mechanism activates immediately after an item is uploaded to the cloud. Copilot analyzes the internal data and displays a contextual pop-up window suggesting three alternative name options. The user retains total control of the operation, being able to choose one of the three variants generated by the artificial intelligence or decide to keep the original file name without applying any changes.

The triggers that activate the renaming algorithms are not limited to the upload phase. Suggestions from the Microsoft suite can also appear when the user decides to manually rename a file already stored in the cloud space. To improve interaction and not interrupt the workflow, the system is designed to show these recommendations through toast notifications integrated directly into the OneDrive web interface.

At the time of its market debut, Suggested Rename will ensure compatibility with a selection of the most common office and multimedia formats. The official list of supported files at launch includes Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, PDF files, text files in Markdown format, and images. Microsoft has not yet released statements or confirmations regarding the extension of support to other file extensions at a later time. However, it is clear that the introduction of Suggested Rename falls within the strategy of integrating Copilot services within the company's cloud offerings.
