Office 2019 for Mac, from July 13 it will only be possible to read files
From July 13, 2026, Microsoft will largely render Office 2019 for Mac, iPhone, and iPad unusable. Support for the software had already ended in October 2023, but the applications continued to work; from that date, they will stop allowing the modification and saving of files.
The apps will not disappear, and documents will remain accessible, but what changes is the ability to really use them: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote will enter what Microsoft calls reduced functionality mode, where files can be opened, viewed, and printed, but not modified, saved, or created. On macOS 11 Big Sur, the deactivation will be nearly complete, while on other systems only read mode will remain active. Mobile versions for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 or earlier will suffer the same fate.
As for the reason, the official documentation is not very transparent. The most credible explanation points to an expiring license validation certificate: without a valid certificate, the applications can no longer confirm that the copy is legitimate and revert to limited mode. This measure only affects Apple platforms, as the versions for Windows and Android are not involved.
It is worth noting that at the time of the end of support, Microsoft assured that the apps would continue to work and that no data would be lost. The first part of that promise, two and a half years later, is worth considerably less.
What can be done
To stay within the Office ecosystem, there are two paid options. The first is a subscription to Microsoft 365, which always provides the latest version of the apps on computers and browsers. The second is a one-time purchase of Office 2024, which, however, requires at least macOS 14 Sonoma. Office 2021 remains an option only on paper: for one-time purchases, Microsoft applies a five-year support window that, for version 2021, closes by the end of 2026.
Those using a Mac stuck on macOS 11 or earlier will need to first update the system to at least macOS 12 Monterey; if the hardware does not allow it, the only way to modify files remains Microsoft 365 used from the browser.
Finally, there is the alternative of abandoning Microsoft’s suite. iWork by Apple (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) is free on Mac, iPhone, and iPad; LibreOffice covers the same ground on desktop; and Microsoft itself has begun offering free versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, albeit with limitations. For simple documents, these solutions are more than sufficient.
The practical advice for those opting for a one-time purchase is to go directly for Office 2024: with the five-year window, coverage extends until 2029, while Office 2021 would close the deal a few months after purchase. And those who continue to see Office 2019 licenses for sale would do well to leave them on the shelf: starting July 13, they will effectively become a document viewer.
