The new MediaTek SoC for the mid-range supports Gemini Nano V3
MediaTek continues to update its range of chips for smartphones and tablets. The latest addition in this regard is the Dimensity 8550, an evolution of the Dimensity 8500 presented in recent months. This is a refresh with some small innovations for MediaTek, which, in the meantime, continues the development of solutions dedicated to the high-end market with the 2nm Dimensity 9500, expected in the second half of the year. Here are the details about the new chip.
A new SoC for the mid-range
The Dimensity 8550 introduces support for Gemini Nano V3 with LLM Booster, aiming to ensure users can take advantage of even higher resolutions with on-device AI. The chip continues to feature the NPU 880.
The CPU remains unchanged, continuing to offer a Cortex-A725 with a maximum frequency of 3.4 GHz, three Cortex-A725 at 3.2 GHz, and four Cortex-A725 at 2.2 GHz. The GPU is a Mali-G720 MC8. The SoC supports LPDDR5X and UFS 4 memory, includes a 5G modem, and allows the use of Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
The new Dimensity 8550 is already available on the market. The chip is used in the version designated for the Chinese market of the HONOR 600 Pro, which, on the other hand, is offered in Europe with the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
The MediaTek SoC will soon arrive on other mid-range and mid-high smartphones and could carve out its space in the European market as well, thanks to OEMs like HONOR itself, Xiaomi and others. Further details regarding the commercial launch will arrive soon.
