HP: 30% of PCs Still Use Windows 10 Despite End of Support

Despite the end of official support for Windows 10 being behind us (October 14, 2025), a significant portion of users continues to use Microsoft's operating system. This was highlighted by HP during its quarterly financial results presentation, where it provided an interesting insight into the state of the transition to Windows 11 within its installed base.

According to statements made by CFO Karen Parkhill during the investor call, about 30% of HP PCs are still equipped with Windows 10. This figure suggests that the upgrade process to Windows 11, although proceeding at a steady pace, is still far from completion.

The executive emphasized how this portion of the installed base represents a growth opportunity in the short term. HP notes that the cycle for renewing PCs related to Windows 11 has now reached in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region a level comparable to that recorded in North America, but there is still a significant amount of systems to be updated or replaced.

The persistence of numerous users on Windows 10 can be explained by several factors. Although Microsoft has introduced the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which allows for continued receipt of security updates even after the end of standard support, this solution has a limited duration. For the consumer segment, Microsoft has currently guaranteed only one additional year of updates, ending on October 14, 2026.

For HP, the transition to Windows 11 represents an advantage on multiple fronts. On one hand, it allows customers to continue using fully supported systems; on the other hand, the hardware requirements introduced by Microsoft, such as the presence of the TPM module and specific security features, could drive a portion of users with incompatible hardware towards purchasing new PCs.

The manufacturer thus sees the completion of the migration as a possible commercial lever for the personal computer market, in a context where the renewal of devices is already supported by the evolution of hardware platforms and the increasing focus on PCs optimized for AI-based workloads.

Meanwhile, Windows 11 continues to expand its reach. According to the most recent data shared by Microsoft, the operating system has reached the milestone of one billion users faster than Windows 10. However, it remains to be seen how quickly the remaining portion of HP users still tied to Windows 10 will complete the transition and what impact this process may have on the PC market in the coming quarters.
