NordVPN Unites VPN and Antivirus in a Single App: What Really Changes

In recent hours, NordVPN has introduced a reorganization of its application around three functions: connection, protection, and monitoring, and has renamed its security tool Threat Protection Pro as next-generation antivirus.

This is a brand repositioning, as the capabilities gathered under the antivirus label are the same as those of the Threat Protection Pro suite, which has long been available in paid plans. With this move, NordVPN aligns itself with the trend of VPN providers presenting themselves as full security apps, a direction already taken by several industry operators.

What Really Changes in the App

The application is now organized around three pillars. The connection corresponds to the VPN itself. The protection gathers the security functions previously known as Threat Protection Pro, now presented as antivirus. The monitoring includes tools such as Dark Web Monitor, which alerts when user credentials appear in breached data repositories.

The antivirus component acts against phishing, online scams, fraudulent shops, and malware, and blocks ads and trackers. NordVPN describes it as proactive protection, capable of intercepting threats before they reach the device, in contrast to the reactive model of traditional antivirus, which is based on recognizing already known files. It also works when the VPN is disabled.

NordVPN particularly emphasizes privacy concerns: traditional antivirus programs require deep access to the system, which has always raised fears regarding the amount of data collected. NordVPN claims to collect only the signals strictly necessary to identify a threat, to prevent the security tool from becoming a surveillance tool. Based on the same principle, the company implements its own machine learning models, dedicated to specific categories of threats.

Availability and Limits

The next-generation antivirus coincides with the previous Threat Protection Pro and is available only on the paid plans Plus, Complete, and Prime, not on the basic plan. It runs on Windows and macOS, without support for smartphones.

From a technical standpoint, not much changes. The certifications from third-party labs that NordVPN showcases, from anti-phishing by AV-Comparatives to the recognition of fake shops, remain those obtained from the function previously called Threat Protection Pro. What reaches users of premium plans is the same protection as before, under a different name and within a reorganized app.
