Dell, major deal worth nearly 10 billion dollars with the Pentagon to provide Microsoft software and advanced cloud services

The United States Department of Defense has announced a five-year agreement valued at approximately 9.7 billion dollars with Dell for the supply of software and digital services intended for the American armed forces. The contract pertains to the program known as Microsoft Department of War Enterprise Software Agreement II Core Enterprise Technology Agreement.

The agreement includes Dell providing the Pentagon with Microsoft 365 licenses, advanced cloud subscriptions, and management capabilities for locally installed software licenses. The contract was awarded to Dell Federal Systems, the division of the company specializing in collaboration with the U.S. government sector.

According to statements from the Chief Information Officer of the Department of Defense, Kirsten Davies, and the interim Chief Information Technology Officer of the Navy, Barry Tanner, the selection occurred through a competitive process. Tanner explained that suppliers were evaluated based on competition, prices compared to those of the General Services Administration, and the overall value offered to the Department of Defense.

Additional details about the Dell and Pentagon agreement

The agreement will allow the Pentagon to centralize the purchase of necessary licenses for Microsoft systems used by the U.S. military apparatus. According to officials, the new system will eliminate redundancies and inefficiencies in the software licenses employed by the Department of Defense and affiliated government agencies. Davies emphasized that the new agreement is expected to yield an annual savings of approximately 422 million dollars due to the consolidation of IT budgets currently distributed among various military services and different federal agencies.

The announcement comes in a particular political context. Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, had promised a donation of 6.25 billion dollars in 2025 to fund the so-called "Trump accounts," investment accounts dedicated to children supported by the Trump administration.

In recent months, Donald Trump has publicly expressed appreciation for Dell. During an event at the White House dedicated to Mother's Day, the president invited citizens to "go buy a Dell," praising the Dell family for their support of the Trump accounts.
