PS6: the new Zen 6 CPU could eliminate a limit of the PS5

Sony is working on the development of the PS6, still awaiting a release date and price due to the memory crisis that complicates the company's projects considerably. In the meantime, a always interesting topic returns to the forefront: the native emulation of PS3 games could be one of the strengths of the future PS6, thanks mainly to a substantial CPU upgrade.

Is this a possible scenario? Digital Foundry has anticipated this possibility, having performed some emulation tests for PS3 games on PS5 (which are usually available only in the cloud). They concluded that the real problem is represented by the CPU bottleneck. Sony's current console has a CPU that is not capable of managing the native emulation of PS3 games effectively.

To achieve this goal, the publication believes it will be necessary to wait for a hardware update. With the Zen 6 architecture CPU of the PS6, there could be the right characteristics to manage the native emulation of PS3 games. A feature of this type would significantly enrich the console's potential, which will have to grapple with a very high price due to the memory crisis.

At the moment, however, there is still no official confirmation from Sony. The Japanese company is still working on developing the console, with the project set to debut only in 2027 (if everything goes smoothly). So there is still time to finalize the work and ensure the possibility of leveraging the native emulation of PS3 games.
