Critterz, the Pixar-style animated film created with AI by OpenAI is stalled
The film project "Critterz", considered one of the most ambitious attempts to create an animated film almost entirely using artificial intelligence tools, is going through a complicated phase following the postponement of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2026.
The film was meant to represent a sort of "Toy Story moment" for OpenAI, demonstrating that generative AI could produce a Pixar-style feature film at significantly lower costs and time compared to traditional Hollywood productions. However, according to Bloomberg, the project failed to meet the Cannes deadline due to the shutdown of Sora, the video generation model developed by OpenAI.
"Critterz" originated as an evolution of a previous animated short created with DALL-E, another AI system from OpenAI dedicated to image generation. The idea was to use Sora to expand the project and create a true animated film. The sudden closure of the service in March of this year, however, drastically slowed the development of the work.

Producers Chad Nelson, who also works as a creative strategist for OpenAI, and James Richardson told Bloomberg that they are now seeking a new technology partner to complete the film. The current goal is to release "Critterz" in the first quarter of next year.
Despite the challenges, the project leaders continue to assert that artificial intelligence can revolutionize the film industry. Richardson stated that a similar film would typically require between 200 and 300 people and up to four years of work, while the "Critterz" team is trying to complete it in nine months with just 15 people.
The situation represents an embarrassing moment for OpenAI, especially considering the expectations generated around Sora and the use of AI in cinema. Bloomberg also reports that Sora was shut down due to high operating costs, which led to significant economic losses for the company. OpenAI, through a spokesperson, has downplayed its direct involvement in the project, clarifying that "Critterz" is an independent film and that the company is neither its producer nor financier.
