End of updates for Destiny 2, but Destiny 3 will have to wait

The recent confirmation of the end of live service updates for Destiny 2 has fueled numerous speculations about the possible arrival of Destiny 3, but according to new hints, Bungie's internal situation is much more complex than expected. A report published by Bloomberg, based on sources close to the studio, suggests that the team is not actively working on a new main chapter in the series.

According to reports, Bungie has not yet approved any specific project for the current development team of Destiny 2. This means that, at least for the moment, the rumored Destiny 3 has not entered a true production phase. Ideas related to the future of the franchise seem to be still in the early stages of proposal and prototyping, making any announcement unlikely in the short term.

The situation is further complicated by the arrival of new layoffs within the company. Bloomberg reports that Bungie is planning further staff cuts after those already made in 2024. At that time, over 200 employees lost their jobs following the cancellation of Payback, a spin-off set in the Destiny universe.

At that time, former CEO Pete Parsons explained that the studio was spread too thin over too many projects simultaneously, using the term incubation to describe the numerous ideas still in embryonic stages. The same concept reappeared in Bungie's latest official statement, where the company stated it wants to move beyond Destiny 2 to start working on its future projects in preliminary development.

Meanwhile, the studio's primary focus seems to be directed towards Marathon, the shooter extraction recently relaunched by Bungie. According to Jason Schreier, the company will continue to invest resources into the title in an attempt to bolster its commercial success. Although the game has received positive reviews, sales have not reached the expected results for either Bungie or Sony.

To broaden the game's audience and attract new users, the studio is also reportedly preparing a more accessible PvE mode, designed to appeal even to players interested in experiences similar to Arc Raiders.
