WhatsApp Scam: Beware of the 'Toll Charge' Fraud, They Steal Your Data and Empty Your Account

A new attempt at digital fraud is hitting Italian users via the WhatsApp platform. Cybercriminals are spreading a message that appears to be an official communication regarding a supposed unpaid highway toll. The message claims that an amount related to a transit was not correctly charged. To avoid possible penalties or additional costs, the victim is urged to regularize the situation quickly, creating a sense of urgency and psychological pressure. The text often indicates the possibility of resolving the situation through a link that directs to a webpage. However, this site has been created with malicious intent and aims to steal sensitive data, including personal information and banking credentials. The technique used falls within the strategies of mimicking known brands and institutions, with the goal of increasing the message’s credibility. In this case, a communication attributed to a highway company is simulated, but it is a fake entity used to deceive users.

How to Avoid Falling for This WhatsApp Scam

Authorities highlight that real communications regarding unpaid payments or potential penalties are never sent via messages on chat applications. Such notices always arrive through official channels such as institutional websites or dedicated applications. The State Police has issued some indications to help recognize this type of fraud. Among the most common signals are unknown numbers with international prefixes, threatening or urgent tones that push for immediate action, and the presence of suspicious or shortened links. Another risk factor is the direct request for personal information or financial data, a practice that is not part of official communications. Experts also remind that similar strategies have been used in the past, even posing as other well-known companies with nonexistent payment requests. In case a suspicious message is received, it is advised to immediately block the sender and report it to the relevant authorities, particularly to the Postal Police. This behavior can help limit the spread of the scam and protect other users from potential harm.
