MG4 Urban at €19,490: The Compact Electric Car Competing with City Cars

MG4 is renewed and doubles: the name becomes unique for two distinct vehicles, MG4 EV and MG4 Urban, united by the same electric DNA but with profoundly different identities and platforms. With over 200,000 units sold in more than 130 countries and 5,500 units in Italy since its launch in 2023, MG4 remains a cornerstone of the brand's electric strategy. The stated goal by Country Manager Andrea Bartolomeo is to return to competing prominently not only in the C segment but also against lower-end vehicles thanks to the Urban’s pricing strategy.

At the same time, MG4 Urban is not born from an adaptation of the existing MG4: it is developed from scratch on a dedicated platform and powertrain, with front-wheel drive and rear suspension featuring a torsion beam. The project revolved around three strategic areas: integrated powertrain, friction reduction, and aerodynamics, to achieve efficiency values above the segment average. The aerodynamic coefficient is Cx 0.26, while the goal for space was equally clear: to offer the accessibility of a city car without compromising on typical aspects of habitability and load capacity.

The battery range is structured around two options, both using LFP chemistry: 43 kWh (range of 325 km WLTP, up to 478 km in the urban cycle) and 54 kWh (range of 416 km WLTP, up to 600 km in the urban cycle). The power output is 110 kW and 118 kW respectively. Fast DC charging allows the battery to go from 30% to 80% in less than 20 minutes; while the maximum AC power is 11 kW. The starting price is €25,490, with a launch offer lowering it to €19,490 thanks to a €6,000 discount.

Interiors and Technology

The cabin focuses on accessibility without sacrificing features: the central 12.8-inch HD display manages a 360° camera with ultrasonic sensors and is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard features include a wireless charger for smartphones, heated seats and steering wheel, and a suite of 14 ADAS systems. The virtual assistant developed with Oppo integrates Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, and TikTok. Additionally, the range is structured on only two equipment levels in line with MG's philosophy of simplicity and transparency applied to the entire lineup.

MG4 EV MY26: Smart Cabin 2.0

Then we have the updated MG4 EV, which maintains rear-wheel drive and five-link suspension but receives a completely redesigned cabin with the Smart Cabin 2.0 design, aligned with the family feeling inaugurated by the MGS5 EV. It debuts the MG Pilot 3.0, the latest evolution of the brand's ADAS suite, bringing the vehicle up to the most stringent active safety standards of 2026. The range structure simplifies into two battery sizes: 64 kWh LFP (Premium trim) and 77 kWh NMC (Premium and XPower AWD). The starting price is €35,490, with a launch offer of €29,490. Both models are covered by a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty.

Two Platforms, Two Philosophies

Beneath the bodywork, MG4 EV and MG4 Urban share no structural elements. The MG4 EV mounts the SAIC MSP (Modular Scalable Platform), the same one on which the original MG4 was built in 2022: a rear-wheel-drive architecture with five-link suspension, designed to prioritize dynamic behavior and driving sportiness. The MG4 Urban, on the other hand, adopts the SAIC E3 platform, which debuted with the MGS5 EV, featuring front-wheel drive, a torsion beam at the rear, and a Cell-to-Body (CTB) architecture: the battery cells are directly integrated into the vehicle structure to lower the center of gravity and free up space in the underfloor area. This choice makes it possible to have a trunk of over 560 liters in a car measuring 4.40 meters, a feat that would have been impossible to achieve on the MSP platform with the multi-link suspension.

The launch arrives at a time when MG has recorded 21,500 units sold in the first four months of 2026, an increase of 7% compared to the same period the previous year. The share of full hybrid vehicles stands at 60% of the range, a technology with which the brand consistently holds a podium position in Italy. Bartolomeo summarizes the strategy: "We have studied the market thoroughly to anticipate the next move and play ahead. We listen to the market, we are there trying to provide answers."
