WoW Classic Plus is Getting Closer: Blizzard Invites Creators to Irvine
The veil of secrecy surrounding Blizzard's future plans for the World of Warcraft Classic ecosystem seems to be showing its first cracks. In recent hours, several high-profile creators linked to the "legacy" server community have confirmed that they have been invited to the company's headquarters in Irvine, California. The nature of the meeting is protected by a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), but the selection of participants suggests that it could involve something structurally different.
Among the confirmed names are heavyweights of the streaming scene such as Xaryu, Sodapoppin, and Esfand. The choice to specifically involve figures who have built their careers on the Classic version of the game, rather than on the "Retail" content of the current expansion, is the strongest signal that Blizzard is finally exploring the concept of Classic Plus. This hypothetical version of the MMORPG would deviate from the original patch timeline to embrace a horizontal or alternative development, introducing new content while maintaining the design and mechanics of the origins.
Blizzard Calls Creators: Is World of Warcraft Classic Plus on the Way?
The idea of a Classic Plus does not come out of nowhere. Blizzard has already tested the waters with Season of Discovery (SoD), a seasonal version that introduced substantial changes to classes, such as mages able to heal or warlocks with tanking abilities. Although SoD was a limited-time experiment, the success it garnered demonstrated the hunger for novelty within the classic frame of Azeroth.
There are also textual clues left by the developers: a summary post for 2025 included references to the long-term future of WoW Classic, visually accompanied by a series of symbols "+" that did not escape the most attentive fans. Additionally, there is the experience from the Chinese market, where players currently have access to a version of WoW Classic that includes remixed raids, operating as a sort of permanent laboratory for unconventional gameplay solutions.
The timing is not coincidental: with BlizzCon expected in September, the developer could begin showing material to creators, allowing them to prepare content or provide critical feedback ahead of a global announcement. Xaryu and colleagues have described their visit with a mix of enthusiasm and caution; during a live stream on Twitch, Xaryu did not hide his smile in response to followers' speculations, only confirming that he had received approval to announce his absence due to the trip to Blizzard's offices.
The transition to a Classic Plus model would resolve the "dead-end" problem that afflicts re-releases of expansions. Once the cycle of Cataclysm or Mists of Pandaria is exhausted, the fragmentation of the user base becomes a tangible risk. Proposing a persistent version with new dungeons, raids, or zones never completed in the original 2004 game could represent the final move to consolidate the nostalgic user base, but there is clearly a real risk of distorting its "classic" essence.
