Nintendo Confirms Reasons for Switch 2 Price Increase: Further Hikes Not Excluded

Recently, Nintendo announced a price increase for the Switch 2, already anticipated by various rumors in recent weeks. The Japanese company is faced with the memory crisis and rising component costs that have forced a price modification. This measure came after strong commercial results: the Switch 2 has achieved 19.86 million units sold during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, and Nintendo expects to sell 16.5 million units in the year ending March 31, 2027. Despite the good data, however, the memory crisis poses a huge obstacle.

Reasons for the Increases

The decision to raise the price of the Switch 2 by Nintendo is, as mentioned, linked to the increase in production costs, as confirmed by Shuntaro Furukawa, the president of the Japanese company, who highlighted the substantial increases recorded, especially in RAM and memory. These increases did not impact profits for the fiscal year that ended last March, but they will affect Switch 2 operations in the future. Furukawa also clarified that the memory crisis could continue and the company is ready to "act flexibly" for the future, also considering the possibility of further increasing prices of the console. This issue will need to be monitored closely in the near future. For Nintendo, it is indeed a very complicated phase; a further increase in the cost of memory could necessitate a swift adjustment of the console's price, risking a significant slowdown in sales in the coming months.
