Unfulfilled AI Promises: $250 Million Penalty for Apple
Apple's Intelligence delays are costing the Cupertino company dearly, as it will have to pay $250 million to settle a class action lawsuit related to the custom features of Siri, which were announced and integrated into the company's marketing campaigns before being postponed (due to the difficulties in developing the new version of Siri).
All the blame falls on Siri.
After the postponement occurred in March 2025, Apple removed all advertisements related to the new features. However, this decision seems to have come too late, at least for the promoters of the class action, who believe that the features were misleadingly promoted by Apple for several months.
The class action, filed in a California court, concerns certain iPhones compatible with Apple Intelligence that were sold between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025. For these products, Apple allegedly promoted AI capabilities that were not actually available.
The marketing campaigns, according to the class action promoters, implied that the features would be available at launch. To avoid further issues, Apple opted to resolve the dispute by paying $250 million (with a refund per device ranging from $25 to $95 based on the number of claims the company receives).
Part of the amount allocated by Apple will be used to cover legal fees and other costs related to the class action. The refund applies only to the United States and can only be claimed by consumers who purchased one of the mentioned products (iPhone 16, iPhone 16e, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max) between June 2024 and March 2025.
