Serie A Rights: Sky has Requested €1.9 Billion in Damages from DAZN and TIM
The transfer of Serie A TV rights to DAZN has revolutionized the world of football. The purchase of the rights for the 2021-2024 triennium, also supported by TIM, is now central to a claim for damages from Sky. The company has requested €1.1 billion in compensation for lost earnings. Considering interests and brand depreciation, the actual amount could rise to €1.9 billion.
A Controversial Agreement
Everything revolves around the agreement between DAZN and TIM, which took place before the awarding of the rights for the 2021-2024 triennium. This agreement, which involved financial support from TIM to DAZN in addition to DAZN's commitment not to negotiate with Sky after the rights were awarded, has been deemed by the Antitrust Authority as "a restrictive agreement on competition." Based on these assessments, Sky has submitted a damages claim that will now be evaluated by the Milan court.
For Sky, losing the Serie A rights has been a severe blow that has led the company to rethink its offer to remain competitive in the market. Currently, the TV rights for Serie A are still held by DAZN, with Sky broadcasting 3 matches in co-exclusivity for each matchday. This arrangement will continue until 2029.
Further updates on the matter will be forthcoming in the coming weeks, and a possible agreement between the parties is not excluded. Meanwhile, Serie A will continue to be broadcast by DAZN, with Sky remaining a reference point for football fans thanks to the 3 matches per round as well as foreign leagues and European cups.
