Goodbye Fitbit App: Google Health Arrives with Gemini AI and Smart Coach

Starting from May 19, the Fitbit app that we all know will officially be renamed Google Health, becoming the centralized hub for every user’s biometric and clinical data. This change, which is somewhat necessary to avoid forcing users of Pixel and Fitbit devices to install two apps, represents a consolidation that will also see Google Fit users migrate to this new platform by the end of the year.

The app's interface has been redesigned around four key pillars: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. A significant new feature is the ability to aggregate data from external sources such as Apple Health, Health Connect, and, in selected markets like the United States, even electronic health records. This allows for a unified view of laboratory test results, medications taken, and vital signs, with Google promising to keep this data isolated from Google Ads' advertising circuits.

Google Health: the Fitbit ecosystem changes name and steps up with Gemini integration

Among the new features is the Google Health Coach, an assistant based on Gemini AI that operates 24/7 to provide proactive and personalized advice. Integrated into the Today tab, the Coach analyzes sleep patterns and physical activity to suggest weekly plans or workout routines created through natural language.

The service is an integral part of Google Health Premium, the new name for the Fitbit Premium subscription, offered at $9.99 per month or $99 per year. In an aggressive commercial move, Google has decided to include the Premium subscription at no additional cost for subscribers of the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans, irrevocably linking health services to its flagship AI offering.

In parallel with the software, Fitbit Air has also been announced, the thinnest device ever made by the brand. This is a screenless tracker designed to disappear on the wrist and ensure maximum comfort during sleep monitoring and daily activities. Thanks to a suite of sensors optimized for interaction with the Health Coach, the device is aimed at those seeking precise data without the distraction of notifications or bright displays.

We have discussed this in more detail here.
