Micron ION 6600: the colossal 245 TB SSD with record performance is now available
Micron has announced the availability of the new 6600 ION SSD with 245TB, a unit that positions itself as the highest capacity commercial SSD in the world. The product directly targets the data center, AI, cloud, enterprise, and hyperscale segments, aiming to significantly increase storage density in racks while simultaneously reducing the physical footprint, energy consumption, and complexity of systems.
The new model arrives in U.2 and E3.L formats, two solutions designed for high-capacity professional environments, and utilizes Micron G9 QLC NAND memory, which the company claims is at least one generation ahead of competing QLC solutions currently adopted in data centers.
The most significant data clearly relates to capacity: 245TB in a single unit allows for an up to 82% reduction in the number of racks needed compared to traditional hard disk-based infrastructures at equivalent raw capacity. This translates to less physical hardware, fewer points of failure, and simplified management for large-scale installations.
Energy consumption is also one of the central aspects of the project. Micron states a maximum draw of 30 watts, a figure that corresponds to about half when compared to HDDs of comparable capacity. Such a reduction impacts not only the energy bill but also cooling requirements and overall CO2 emissions.
For AI workloads, Micron highlights particularly aggressive numbers: the 6600 ION with 245TB offers energy efficiency up to 84 times greater, AI preprocessing speed up to 8.6 times faster, 3.4 times more input throughput, and latency up to 29 times lower compared to traditional HDDs.
In cloud-scale data storage, the new SSD also shows significant advantages, with throughput per watt up to 435 times higher, first byte times up to 96 times faster, and aggregated throughput up to 58 times better.
Micron has also provided data on implementations of up to 1 exabyte, where an HDD configuration requires 1.9 times more energy compared to one based on the 6600 ION. Annually, this means over 921 MWh of energy saved, a reduction of 438 tons of CO2, and an HVAC load cut exceeding 3.14 billion Btu.
