Closure of Libero Community and Digiland: A Piece of Italian Internet Shuts Down on June 9th
It was the portal where many of us built our first website, wrote our first blog posts, and chatted for hours with strangers who became friends. Now, Libero Community, with all its services - from Digiland to WordPress blogs, from Spazioinwind to Cupido - is heading towards definitive retirement. The date circled in red is Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Do you remember Digilander? The HTML templates copied and pasted, the animated GIFs from visitors, the guestbooks filled with "your site is beautiful!"? That golden age of Italian DIY internet is about to close officially. It was the web for everyone, before social media arrived.
In its official announcement, Libero acknowledges the emotional weight of this decision: "We know that for users, the Digiland Community was not just a service but also a meeting and dialogue place frequented by thousands of users, who animated Profiles, Blogs, Personal Sites, Chats, Cupido. That's why we want to say THANK YOU." A farewell that is far from painless.
From the day of closure, the following services will no longer be accessible:
- Digiland Profiles
- WordPress Blogs
- Classic Blogs
- WordPress Sites
- Spazioinwind
- Digilander
- users.libero.it
- Libero Chat
- Cupido
Registration for new accounts and the addition of new nicknames has already been disabled. As of June 9, nicknames associated with the Community will no longer be available. The closure of the Community has no impact on Libero Mail or other Libero services. Email boxes remain active.
There is time until June 8 to save everything. After closure, contents will no longer be recoverable. Libero has set up a centralized page for downloading and has published a FAQ with information on how to save your data.
The advent of social media and smartphones, and now artificial intelligence, has completely changed the Internet, distorting its initial vision, turning it into a realm full of closed circuits to vomit content, not so much to connect or give something to others, but often for economic gain or visibility. Let it be clear, it is not always like this and there are virtuous cases, even on social media, but the closure of Libero Community allows one to reflect on what it was and what it is, in addition to placing another nail in the coffin of the history of the Internet in Italy.
