GTA 6 Will Arrive First on Console: Take-Two's Main Audience Is Not PC Gamers

The launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled for November 19, barring any delays, but it will initially be available only on consoles. The PC version, while considered likely in the future, has not yet been officially announced. The reasons for this choice were clarified by Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, during an interview with Bloomberg.

According to Zelnick, the company's strategy is based on the need to prioritize the "main audience," identified as console players. The idea is that satisfying this segment first is essential to ensure the overall success of the title before expanding to other markets.

However, this stance seems to contrast with the data shared by the same executive. Zelnick noted how, in the past, the PC market represented a marginal share of sales, citing, for example, the NBA 2K series, which in 2007 generated about 5% of sales on computers. Today, however, the situation has changed significantly: for major titles, the PC can account for between 45% and 50% of total sales.

GTA 6 and the Initial Console Launch

This data raises questions about the decision to exclude the platform from the initial launch of a highly anticipated game like GTA 6. Despite the growing weight of the PC audience, Take-Two continues to favor an initial console distribution, following a tradition established by Rockstar Games, the studio responsible for the series.

Another possible explanation for this strategy concerns the economic aspect. Some industry observers suggest that a delayed release on PC could generate a second wave of sales, with users willing to buy the game twice: first on console and then later on PC.

Indeed, the history of Rockstar titles shows that the transition to PC can take varying amounts of time, from a few months to extremely long periods. Therefore, this is a practice we have seen before, even though it continues to generate discontent among PC gamers. While waiting for official announcements, it is confirmed that GTA 6 will initially debut on consoles, while PC users will likely have to wait longer.

Finally, Zelnick stated that there is a marketing exclusivity agreement involving GTA 6 and PS5, meaning the game has been and will be primarily showcased on the console of the Japanese company. This does not mean that Sony will have an exclusive in terms of releases or content, but it certainly represents a piece to consider in the launch strategy of the highly anticipated title.
