From Vacuum Cleaners to Companion Robots: iRobot's Co-Founder Aims to Impress Again
One of the co-founders of iRobot, Colin Angle, returns to the spotlight with a completely different project compared to the domestic cleaning robots that made him famous. After helping to spread vacuum robots into millions of homes, Angle has announced a new company called Familiar Machines & Magic, focused on creating robots designed to offer companionship, rather than carrying out practical tasks.
The devices developed by the startup are named "Familiars" and are described as embodied artificial intelligence systems capable of perceiving the environment, adapting to the context, and interacting with people in a natural and consistent manner over time. The idea is to create machines that can establish a form of relationship with humans, going beyond traditional applications of robotics.
During a speech at the Future of Everything conference organized by The Wall Street Journal, Angle emphasized that the future of the industry does not solely depend on the ability of robots to move precisely or take on humanoid appearances. According to him, the real evolution lies in the development of systems capable of understanding context, remembering interactions, and maintaining consistent behaviors over time, which are essential elements for building a connection with the user.
Further Details on the Devices from iRobot's Founder's New Company
The first prototype developed by the company is specifically designed for social interaction. It features a design intended to express attention and intentionality through body movements, resembling a pet and aiming to be appealing.

From a technical standpoint, the robot is covered with a touch-sensitive surface and integrates several cameras along with a microphone system. These components allow for smoother communication with people, supported by a proprietary artificial intelligence architecture based on a compact multimodal model optimized to interpret social signals.
Currently, the product is not yet ready for the market. The first Familiar is indeed a functioning prototype used as a demonstration of the technology's potential. No details have been provided regarding possible commercialization timelines or pricing. It remains to be seen if and when these companion robots will hit the shelves.
