YouTube Makes Picture-in-Picture Free for All Users on Android and iOS
YouTube has begun the global rollout of the free Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for all users, expanding a feature that was previously mainly available in the United States or reserved for Premium subscribers. The update affects both Android and iOS devices and aims to enhance the user experience on smartphones.
The PiP mode allows users to continue watching a video in a resizable window while using other applications. Once a piece of content is launched, users can simply exit the app to view the video in a small movable box, which can be repositioned and resized to their needs. The interface also provides quick access to main controls like pause and play or returning to full screen.
This new feature is available for free to all users, but with some limitations. The Picture-in-Picture without a subscription is only supported for long-form content that does not fall under the music category. This means that music videos will still require a subscription to be played in PiP mode.

For paid users, there are no changes planned. Premium Lite subscribers will continue to use PiP for non-music content, while Premium users will retain full access to the feature, including uninterrupted playback of music content.
The rollout of the feature has already begun and will gradually continue over the coming months, until it reaches all users worldwide. This progressive approach is typical of large digital platforms, which test and optimize new features before making them widely available.
The introduction of free PiP represents an important step for YouTube, which continues to balance offerings between free services and premium features. Making this option accessible to a broader audience could increase app usage time and enhance the overall user experience.
