Put Your Smartphone in a Chocolate Wrapper and Disappear from the World: The Madness of Kit Kat
An unusual idea is making waves in the world of technology and marketing: Kit Kat has introduced a special packaging that can completely isolate a smartphone from external signals. The project, developed in collaboration with the creative agency Ogilvy Colombia, is named "Break Mode" and transforms the brand's famous slogan into a tangible experience.
The operation is based on the principle of the Faraday cage, a conductive structure that prevents the passage of electromagnetic signals. By placing the phone inside the packaging, all connections are interrupted: calls, mobile network (4G and 5G), Bluetooth, and GPS cease to function, creating a real "offline zone".
From a technical standpoint, the wrapper consists of multiple layers designed to ensure total isolation. Copper plays a crucial role as a conductive material, while polyester ensures structural stability. An outer layer made of polypropylene contributes to strength and durability, while a precisely designed closure system prevents any signal leaks.
Kit Kat's "insulating" packaging is not yet available on the market. According to tests conducted, the packaging is capable of completely blocking communications, thanks to checks on radio signal attenuation, electromagnetic isolation, and cellular network intensity. Furthermore, the product is designed to last about a year and can be disassembled for material recycling.
Despite the innovation, Break Mode is not yet available on the market. The project has been showcased in select venues, such as a tech conference in Panama, a concert, and a university campus, where users had the opportunity to try it out firsthand. Currently, its potential commercialization is still under evaluation.
This initiative is part of a growing trend that combines food and technology, giving rise to hybrid and often surprising products. Recently, for example, devices such as lollipops capable of transmitting music through contact have been introduced, demonstrating how the boundaries between the two worlds are becoming increasingly blurred.
