Humanoid Robots at Airports: Tokyo Begins Handling Baggage Sorting

The future of work at airports may become increasingly automated, and Japan seems ready to lead this transformation. At Tokyo's Haneda Airport, one of the busiest hubs in the country, an experimental program is set to launch that involves the use of humanoid robots for baggage management and other operational activities.

The initiative is led by Japan Airlines, which has decided to start a testing phase beginning in May 2026. The goal is to address a growing labor shortage that is putting pressure on the Japanese airport sector, especially during a period of significant increase in passenger traffic.

Humanoid robots will initially be used for tasks such as baggage sorting and loading cargo onto planes. However, the ambitions of the project are much broader: in the future, these machines could also be employed for cleaning aircraft cabins and managing ground support equipment, such as baggage carts.

Potential and Considerations for the Use of Humanoid Robots at Airports (and Beyond)

Unlike traditional industrial robots, designed to perform repetitive tasks in controlled environments, humanoid robots must face much more complex challenges. Airports are dynamic and unpredictable environments, where it is necessary to continuously adapt to different situations and interact safely with humans. For this reason, one of the main objectives of the test is to determine whether the latest artificial intelligence systems are sufficiently advanced to allow robots to operate in such complex contexts without significant modifications to the existing infrastructure.

Despite the potential, early demonstrations show that the technology is still in development. In some videos, the robots appear unsure in their movements and not fully autonomous. Another critical aspect concerns safety. Having humanoid robots work alongside human operators in a high-intensity environment like an airport requires high standards and careful planning. Not surprisingly, the initial phase of the project will also focus on identifying the safest areas to deploy these machines. From an economic standpoint, humanoid robots still represent a significant investment, with costs that can reach tens of thousands of dollars per unit.
