Corsair expands its offering of accessories for high-performance systems with the new ThermalProtect PCIe 5.1 600W 12V-2x6, a cable that introduces a different approach to the safety of high-end GPUs like the GeForce RTX 5090. The distinguishing feature is not the power delivery capability - which has now become standardized at 600W for new generation connectors - but the method by which overheating risk is managed.

In recent years, the increased consumption of high-end graphics cards has brought the issue of power connector reliability into the spotlight, particularly those based on the 12VHPWR standard and later evolved into the 12V-2x6.

The most well-known problems are not so much related to the theoretical current carrying capacity, but to practical factors such as improper insertion, mechanical stress, or insufficient thermal dissipation. In this context, simply monitoring the current is not always enough: overheating can also occur under nominal load, but in the presence of non-optimal contacts or high resistance at the connection point.

Corsair's new cable introduces proprietary technology called ThermalProtect, which implements Over Temperature Protection (OTP) directly in the cable.

Unlike indirect approaches, the system measures the actual temperature at the critical point thanks to a KSD thermal sensor integrated into the wiring, positioned about 30 mm from the GPU side connector. This is a more robust solution compared to traditional NTC sensors, as it more accurately detects the actual contact conditions.

If the temperature exceeds 65°C, the system intervenes in milliseconds: via the signal pins (sense0 and sense1) of the 12V-2x6 connector, the cable sends a command to the GPU to force immediate shutdown. It’s a preventive approach: the goal is not to manage the problem but to prevent its consequences, protecting both the graphics card and the connector itself.

The operation leverages the intrinsic features of the 12V-2x6 standard, which integrates a row of pins dedicated to communication between the power supply and GPU to indicate the available power (up to 600W in this case).

The ThermalProtect module is inserted into a cable comb near the GPU connector and constantly monitors the temperature. Under normal conditions, it remains completely transparent to the system, but in case of an anomaly, the GPU shuts down (black screen), while the rest of the system remains active (fans and RGB continue to function).

This way, the user can quickly identify that it is an OTP intervention and not a system crash. The most common causes of activation remain those already known: incomplete insertion of the connector or imperfect contacts, which is why Corsair continues to emphasize the importance of a proper connection.

The ThermalProtect PCIe 5.1 is designed to work with power supplies equipped with a native 12V-2x6 connector, without the need for adapters, and is therefore compatible with PSUs from any brand because all the logic is integrated into the cable.

In the absence of absolute guarantees against overheating problems - which in extreme cases can lead to connector melting - the Corsair ThermalProtect PCIe 5.1 introduces a pragmatic approach: instead of estimating the risk through indirect parameters, it directly measures the temperature at the most critical point.

It’s a conceptually simple solution, but potentially very effective in preventing real and costly problems, especially at a time when GPUs continue to push for ever-increasing consumption.
